Why Marketing Matters: More Than Ads, Logos, and Social Media Posts

People often ask me why I love marketing.

The answer is simple.

Marketing isn't about selling things.

It's about telling stories.

It's about helping people understand who you are, why you exist, and why they should care.

It's about finding the heart of a business and bringing it to life.

After more than 25 years in marketing, I still get excited when I sit down with a business owner and start asking questions.

  • Why did you start this business?

  • What problem are you solving?

  • What are you passionate about?

  • What do you want people to remember about you?

  • What makes you different?

The answers to those questions are where great marketing begins.

Marketing Is Not What Most People Think It Is

Many people think marketing is social media. Or a logo. Or a website. Or an advertisement.

Those things are certainly part of marketing, but they aren't marketing.

Marketing is the process of connecting people to your brand.

It's helping customers understand who you are before they ever walk through your door.

It's building trust before the first conversation.

It's creating an experience people remember.

It's the difference between being "just another option" and becoming the obvious choice.

One of My Favorite Parts of Marketing

I love helping businesses discover their "why."

Sometimes business owners know exactly why they do what they do, but they've never put it into words.

Other times, they've become so immersed in the day-to-day operations that they've forgotten the thing that made them special in the first place.

I love asking questions. I love listening. I love uncovering the story behind the business. And I love helping businesses communicate that story in a way that resonates with customers.

Because people don't connect with products.

They connect with purpose.

The Cost of Not Marketing

One of the biggest misconceptions I encounter is:

"We don't need marketing because we're busy."

I understand the logic.

When business is good, marketing often falls to the bottom of the priority list.

The problem is that marketing isn't something you do when business slows down.

Marketing is what helps prevent business from slowing down.

Without marketing:

  • New customers don't discover you.

  • Existing customers forget about you.

  • Competitors fill the void.

  • Opportunities are missed.

  • Growth becomes inconsistent.

Marketing is like exercise.

You don't do it once and expect lifelong results.

Consistency matters.

The Danger of an Undefined Brand

Perhaps the biggest challenge I see is businesses operating without a clearly defined brand.

When a brand isn't defined, strange things start to happen.

One social media post sounds professional.

The next sounds sarcastic.

The website sounds corporate.

The newsletter sounds casual.

The sales team says one thing.

The marketing materials say something completely different.

Customers are left wondering:

"Who are these people?"

Imagine meeting someone who changes their personality every time you see them.

One day they're serious.

The next day they're a comedian.

The next day they're a motivational speaker.

The next day they're a pirate.

You'd be confused.

Customers feel the same way when brands lack consistency.

A strong brand creates familiarity.

Familiarity creates trust.

Trust creates customers.

Silly Things That Happen Without a Defined Brand

I've seen businesses:

  • Use five different logos.

  • Change colors every six months.

  • Post memes one day and formal corporate announcements the next.

  • Sound luxury on their website and discount-focused on social media.

  • Promote products without explaining why anyone should care.

  • Create marketing that appeals to everyone and therefore connects with no one.

The result?

Confusion.

And confused customers rarely buy.

Not every customer is your customer.

7. It Reinforces Customer Loyalty

Marketing isn't just for acquiring customers—it's for keeping them.

8. It Creates Long-Term Value

Brands become assets.

9. It Gives Your Business a Personality

And every business has a story worth telling.

More Than a Job

Marketing has allowed me to work with incredible people, amazing businesses, and inspiring organizations throughout my career.

I've helped launch products.

I've helped build brands.

I've helped tell stories.

I've helped businesses discover who they are and communicate it with confidence.

That's why I love what I do.

Not because of the ads.

Not because of the social media posts.

Not because of the campaigns.

I love marketing because every business has a story.

And helping people tell that story never gets old.

So if you're a business owner, here's my challenge:

  • Take a step back.

  • Ask yourself why your business exists.

  • Ask yourself what makes you different.

  • Ask yourself what story you're telling.

Because whether you realize it or not, your brand is already communicating something.

The question is: Are you telling the story you want people to hear?
